The 2017-2018 Kia Optima Hybrid and 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid sedans are being recalled to fix the problem with the petrol engines of the affected vehicles.

Both models share a basic operating system and powertrain, the latter being the reason for the recall. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, affected vehicles may have vulnerable connecting rod bearings. In the worst case scenario, it could break the connecting rod and puncture the engine compartment, destroying the engine and creating a fire hazard.

Hyundai’s recall includes 13,247 Sonata hybrids and Kia 10,731 Optima hybrids, for a total of 23,978 United States vehicles under both brands.

Plug-in hybrid versions of the Sonata Hybrid and Optima Hybrid were also sold during the affected model years. Kia, the brand owned by Hyundai, has openly stated that it will include the Optima plug-in hybrid recall. Hyundai has not released a similar statement, but its recall includes the Sonata plug-in hybrid.

All versions have a “Nu” 2.0-liter direct-injected Inline-4, manufactured in Ulsan, South Korea. The same recall also affected the Hyundai Tucson, which at the time was not offered as a hybrid, but had the same engine.

The recall population was determined by reviewing production records, according to recall documents. Hyundai and Kia are unaware of a specific manufacturing or design flaw and are recalling it as a preventive measure, the documents said.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Hyundai and Kia with instructions to take their cars to dealerships. Hyundai plans to start notifying owners by mail on November 12th, while Kia will continue on November 29th.

The engines are tested and, if necessary, replaced free of charge. Dealerships will also install knock sensor detection system software to prevent damage caused by excessive connecting rod bearing wear. The Kia Powertrain warranty extends from 10 years / 100,000 miles to 15 years / 150,000 miles.

The affected models represent the previous generation Sonata and Optima. The plug-in hybrid version of the Sonata was discontinued in 2020, instead of being pushed towards plug-in hybrid SUVs. Kia discontinued all hybrid optimizations when the lineup was redesigned and renamed K5.

Hyundai plans to replace the full battery pack for the 82,000 EVs this year, but the engine problem is a minor issue compared to the previous year.

Hyundai is said to have stopped making petrol powertrains as it shifts towards EVs. Kia has announced a $ 25 billion investment aimed at achieving its own EV conversion by 2020, confirming 11 new electric models by 2025.
