Air India can capture international market share under Tata, say global airline chiefs

Global airline executives including Emirates President Tim Clarke and Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr believe that Air India under the Tata Group has a huge opportunity to capture a large share of the international aviation market.

Clarke said airline operations in India are difficult. However, he was convinced that only the Tata group could serve as a legacy airline. “Air India should be as big as United Airlines due to its domestic market as well as the amount of non-resident Indians (NRIs) abroad and economic activity going into and out of India. It is a gold mine,” Clarke said while speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 78th Annual General Meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Doha.

Currently, Air India’s fleet size is one-fifth that of United Airlines.

‘If Tata can’t do it no one can’

He said that for decades, Air India has remained a small player on the international scene. “Hence, it is not easy to operate in the Indian market even though the population is significantly upward and getting more mobile over time. So, you need a secure pair with business acumen to be able to activate it (Air India). If Tata can’t make it work, no one there (in India) will be able to make it work,” Clarke said.

Unlike many other countries, India has a huge demand, he added. Asked how the rise of Air India will affect the Emirates, he confidently said, “As far as the Emirates is concerned, well, let’s be honest. I mean, there’s a lot for everyone.”

gain market share

Meanwhile, Lufthansa’s Spohar said the acquisition of Air India by the Tata group will benefit Indian travelers. He said that Lufthansa Group appreciates the idea of Government of India to make Air India a strong player to gain share in the Indian international passenger market.

Asked about the impact on Lufthansa’s India operations, Spohr said, “Indian carriers have an opportunity to take a bigger share of the Indian market than ever before. To be honest, most of the growth in the (Indian international passenger) market.” carried by the carriers of the Gulf.
