Pontiac. Mercury. Oldsmobile. Chrysler seemed to be heading towards the same fate as these bad traditional American brands, but the company with the winged logo wants to take the plane again as Stellandis’ electric vehicle ambassador.

It has given new life to Chrysler.

At the 2022 Consumer Electronics Showcase, Chrysler unveiled the first step in its new direction with the Airflow Concept. Although the company insists that this is only a concept, without a production purpose, it is difficult to believe how much of the product is ready — at least with the company’s images and virtual-conferencing tools. Although it may seem like it could be out by today, we have to wait until 2025 when the first Chrysler BEV starts.

Following the introduction, we spoke with Stellandis CTO Nate Curiek and Chrysler brand CEO Chris Fuel to get some more information on moving forward with Airflow and Stellandis’ overall electric vehicle strategies.

Chrysler promises to bring a new electric model to the brand by 2025 and to transform the brand entirely into an electric model by 2028. The choice to update the Chrysler in this category was an interesting one, as the brand was ignored as its models slowly expired. Only 300 large sedans and Pacifica minivans will stand.

But Stellandis sees the brand as “a symbol of American car history” and, according to Curiek, “I truly believe we have a chance to rediscover what Chrysler stands for.”

Future vehicle, current design

According to Fuel, the choice to create the design of the airflow was made deliberately, which makes it feel more interesting than the future. While he said the concept was “an example of where Chrysler is heading in the future”, he pointed out that product designs are more relevant to the future than concept at an interesting turn. Airflow in the United States was designed by Ralph Gilles, with no input from overseas or from the other 13 brands of Stellandis.

See if the Airflow name will be carried on a product vehicle. Fuel said Chrysler did not want to use it like that, but the positive feedback pushed it into consideration.

Fuel confirmed that Airflow is considered a “utility vehicle” by Chrysler and is supported by Stellandis’ STLA large platform, which is one of four BEV platforms to support the company’s electric vehicles moving forward worldwide. According to the company’s announcement earlier this year, the site is designed for “AWD Performance and American Muscle”, which fits Airflow’s dual-motor system in the 350-400 mile range. A Dodge muscle-car concept on the same platform is expected to be developed on the same platform, later this year.

Chrysler refused to provide official dimensions or specifications on Airflow, but during our video interview I asked File to stand next to the comment, and she was obligated. At sizes like the Ford Mustang Mac-E and Hyundai Ionic 5, it is personally much taller than the photos suggest.

The screens are cool, the shelves are cool

Currick also said that part of Airflow’s infotainment goal is to “bring technology that connects home, car and wherever I go.” And with the addition of cameras in each seat, passengers will be able to participate in video conferencing. The excuse of “I drive” to exit zoom meetings can be very bad for some.

While each individual screen offers occupants their own ecosystem, travelers can swipe content from one screen to another. The look is more modest than what was seen on the Mercedes-Benz EQS and its hyperscreen and it was done on purpose. According to Currick, cars today are moving towards being too busy, and “to reduce digital noise, that’s what we’re bringing in: connected, but in the background.”

Beyond the screens, one feature that caught my eye was the seemingly extended platform that came out of the liftcat. It is actually a mechanical shelf that easily loads the vehicle and then backs into the cargo area.

The source of power is unknown

Both Currick and Fuel declined to comment on the source of the batteries for the Airflow concept or future Chrysler products, but it is a good bet that they will emerge from Stellandis’ final final partnership with LG. Curiek points out that recent events “make sense to keep the entire supply chain close to where the car will be built.”

Chrysler’s renaissance as a BEV blockbuster carrier may be just another renaissance for a brand that has sometimes been repeated over and over again in the history books. We still have some doubts, it would take a proclamation of something beyond a concept without any production purpose to satisfy it, but the confidence of Electric Pacifica has now provoked us enough.
