Goodyear shows how to make tires with less petroleum, emissions – EV Updates 2022

Goodyear on Wednesday unveiled a tire made of 70% durable materials. This is a step towards the company’s goal of making tires from 100% stable materials by 2030.

Although this tire is not ready for production (Goodyear calls it the “demonstration tire”), it does show some of the products that Goodyear examines to reduce petroleum consumption and emissions from the manufacturing process.

The tire includes 13 stable products, including soybean oil, rice husk ash silica, bio-based polymers, fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles and renewable resins, the Goodyear press release said.

Some of the carbon black used in tires is not made from burning oil, the traditional manufacturing process that produces the most pollution. The tire contains three carbon blocks made from carbon dioxide, vegetable oil and methane. These are very consistent processes, says Goodyear. The company also points out that methane can be replaced by “renewable natural gas” to reduce emissions.

Goodyear recently announced that it will be collaborating with chemical company Monolith on the production of stable carbon black. The Department of Energy has approved a $ 1.04 billion loan to Monolith for the technology, which will start on natural gas and split it into hydrogen gas — which could be used by fuel-cell vehicles and the carbon block.

Tire manufacturers have been testing standard products for some time. In 2009, Yokohama announced a tire made with orange peels as a way to reduce petroleum consumption. A decade later, Bridgestone announced plans to use reclaimed carbon black in large-scale production of new tires.

Goodyear has tried to attack the problem from a different angle. Its 2020 Recharge Concept used fluid-filled capsules to recreate tire treads, which would extend the life of the tires. However, that technology is not ready for production anywhere.

It is also worth noting that all contamination of tires comes from production. Tire dust is a significant form of local air pollution that can be a problem even after the new vehicles are fully electrified.
