Vehicle supplier Magna on Wednesday unveiled an electric powertrain and four-wheel drive system for pickup trucks and light commercial vehicles, which is scheduled to reach production by 2025.

While many automakers are launching electric half-ton pickup trucks, Magna’s solution, dubbed the EtelligentForce, is designed for larger three-quarters of a ton and one-ton vehicles, according to a company press release.

EtelligentForce builds Magna’s eBeam, a modular solution that connects an electric motor to a solid beam axis. The drive components are assembled between the truck’s current frame rails, which provide a way to convert the truck into plug-in hybrids while preserving the towing capacity.

The new system goes one step further by adding another electric drive unit to the front axle. The front motor can deliver up to 180 kW (241 horsepower) while the rear eBeam can be tuned from 250 kw to 430 kw (335 hp to 576 hp), says Magna.

Magna says the system requires no architectural changes to the vehicle and allows it to pull up to 14,500 pounds — although there are battery packs that weigh thousands of pounds, we do not know how big a pack is allowed in it. Calculation.

The company did not confirm a North American customer, but said it was targeting production by 2025. Magna also plans to open a new EV Center at its U.S. headquarters in Troy, Michigan, USA, to continue the development of the EtelligentForce Powertrain and other projects.

Other plans include a powertrain upgrade for cars, called EtelligentReach, which Magna claims will offer a 30% range incentive. The company has previously said that EtelligentReach will make its debut in the “new entry vehicle” this year.

The supplier is not ashamed to point out how designs can be tuned for better performance and range. EtelligentReach and another powertrain we modeled in 2020 were demonstrated on the Jaguar i-Pace, built by the company’s Magna-Steyr division in Austria.

The Magna-Steer is expected to create the Fischer Ocean, and Magna will provide some technologies for that crossover as well.
