Mining lease case: Court expresses anger on Soren’s lawyer

The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday expressed displeasure over Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s lawyer during the hearing of petitions on money laundering and office of profit.

A bench of Chief Justice Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad was appalled by the fact that during the hearing, Soren’s lawyer Amritansh Vats did not have a vakalatnama.

Senior advocate Meenakshi Arora, appearing for Soren, sought more time, saying she was not given all the petitions filed in the matter.

The court noted that senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who had earlier appeared for Soren, never raised the issue of non-action of the petitions.

Advocate Vats was the local counsel for Soren and was responsible for receiving the petitions.

On further enquiry, it is learned that Vats had earlier appeared in the case without proper Vakalatnama executed by Soren.

Vakalatnama is a written consent given by a client to his lawyer to plead and argue a case on his behalf. It also empowers the advocate to file and receive petitions on behalf of his client.

Arora sought a later date for the hearing. The court, however, was not inclined to grant more time and fixed June 30 as the next date of hearing.

Two petitions have been filed against Soren in the High Court. While one claimed that an office of profit was held by him as he was allegedly granted a mining lease, the other is in connection with the parking of illegal money in shell companies allegedly owned and operated by him and his associates. .
