Last week Elio Motors priced the 150-mile full electric version of its high-capacity, three-wheeler: $ 14,900.

It has a different shape and price than the original Elio, 12 years after its original announcement and 9 years after its original expected arrival date. Call a company a startup only in the sense that the product has not yet been delivered.

Since its inception in 2009, the Elio has been working slowly on the same single product — a petrol-powered three-wheeler with an original design that sells it for just $ 6,800, with 84-mpg EPA-fuel economy. By the end of the last decade, it would have cost less than $ 8,000 and more than 80 mpg.

Elio’s electric project – which founder Paul Elio has repeatedly opposed for years – was clarified in its 2020 annual report to the SEC last week, following which a press release was issued. The company now says it plans to discontinue a petrol model called the Elio-G in support of the Elio-E – but still plans to build the Elio-G.

The company claims that the Elio-E can go over the Elio-G at “100 mph” at 110 mph. While the petrol model has a range of 672-miles from its 8-gallon tank, the electric model still returns 150 miles from the unexplained battery pack.

Elio has two models competing — two and three-wheeled. Born again in Southern California last year, Optera is looking to bring its “never-charged” solar car to a base price of $ 25,900 by next year. Then there’s the ElectraMeccanica Solo, a $ 18,500 single-seater EV that, after some delays, is coming this year with retail locations in Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington and Colorado.

Elio previously boasted of being the first start-up automaker to develop its own internal combustion engine in 60 years, as the company later acknowledged that it was a modified version of the Suzuki 3-cylinder that was last delivered in the United States on the Geo Metro. . It abandoned that project and signed with Rush in 2018 for machine delivery.

It appears that the relationship with Roush may continue with Elio-E. It wrote in the financial filing: “Elio contacted Roosevelt (one of Elio Motors’ engineering providers) and estimated that the current design could be electrified using a significant portion of the engineering and development already underway (including about $ 40,000,000).”

Elio continues to function despite a lack of attraction. In 2020 alone, it recorded a loss of $ 18.0 million, bringing the company’s accumulated deficit to $ 215.8 million.

The company is registered in Delaware, but is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Elio still claims to be assembling his vehicles at a former GM plant in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Elio’s deadline for the arrival of its product has changed as fast as the horizon. It was first announced in 2014 that production was planned at Shreveport. A prototype worthy of testing has been developed since 2016. In 2017, as the car had not yet arrived, he promised early 2019. The company said it did not expect Elio to begin delivering vehicles to customers until 2023, in fiscal year 2019.

The company has made many promises over the years and, in general, has failed to deliver on most of them. Elio promised to hire 1,500 US workers by 2015 – Elio reiterated in 2019.

Elio is a warning story among automobile startups, even before today’s long line of electric-vehicle startups brought SPACs into the conversation. It claimed to be the first equity crude fund to publicly list its shares, and in 2016 crossed the $ 1 billion mark in the early days of trading — in recent years it has sunk to a very small fraction.

In 2017, the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Authority found Elio operating as a manufacturer and dealer without a license. The commission has ordered that Elio’s refundable bookings be kept in a separate account — something the company has not done until then.

In 2018, after that and after a series of delays, Elio sold about $ 2.5 million in shares of the company to Overstock.com and exposed ElioCoin, a cryptocurrency, to help pay off the company’s growing debt.

Elio stopped sending regular weekly email updates in November 2019, and before the Elio-E announcement it removed its previous blog and updates. Now it has added a page about Fleet to establish Elio-Ei as a solution for the service and small distribution sector. That page suggests relationships with Grubhub, DoorDash, Geek Squad, Amazon and more.
