Plea in Delhi HC to change call sign VT on Indian planes

Plea in Delhi HC to change call sign VT on Indian planes

A petition was filed in the Delhi High Court on Thursday, seeking a direction to the Center to change the call sign ‘VT’ on Indian aircraft, saying the prefix stands for Victorian territory and Viceroy’s territory, a legacy of the British Raj.

The petition states that the call sign or registration code is for identification of an aircraft and the prefix ‘VT’ is the nationality code that every aircraft registered in India is required to carry.

The petition sought a direction to the central government to change the call sign ‘VT’ on Indian aircraft to secure the sovereignty of India as well as the right to rule of law, right to liberty and dignity of Indians guaranteed under the Constitution. Countries like China, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka changed the call signs of their aircraft soon after independence.

The code is usually seen just before the rear exit door and above the windows. All domestic airlines have a prefix followed by unique letters that define the aircraft and who it belongs to. For example, registration VT in IndiGo flights followed by IDV, i.e. VT-IDV, for Jet, is VT-JVM,” said the petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.

It said the prefix marks that the aircraft is registered in the country and it is mandatory in all countries and the registration of the aircraft is required to be shown in its certificate of registration and an aircraft can have only one registration in one jurisdiction.

“The petitioner submits that the registration number of Indian aircraft marks the legacy of ‘British Raj’. The ‘VT’ code is a reflection of the colonial rule. India is a sovereign country and therefore cannot be the territory of the Viceroy. Why does India continue with the VT code? The government’s efforts to change the registration code have been fruitless.

”In 2004, the Ministry of Aviation approached the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to change the code, but no decision has been taken yet. This is a code given to us by the British rulers in 1929, indicating us as a British territory. It is very unfortunate that India has retained the symbol of slavery VT even after 75 years of independence.

The petitioner has put the Ministries of Home Affairs, Finance, External Affairs, Civil Aviation and Law and Justice in favor of the petition.
