Volvo’s march towards electrification continues at a brisk pace, with a growing portfolio of electric vehicles (such as the C40 recharge coming in the first quarter of next year) and a number of hybrid versions of the T8 plug-in. Its other vehicles.

But the Swedish automaker did not stop there. Volvo reaches the rest of its lineup, adding mild hybrid to its T5 and T6 gas engines. Next year or so, almost all Volvo models will only be offered with some kind of electrification (whatever it is).

Both the T5 and T6 are based on a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, with the addition of a supercharger to increase T6 engine output. Those powertrains are renamed B5 and B6 (no, B does not refer to the battery). Both the B5 and B6 will be based on a more turbocharged 4-cylinder and will be incorporated into a 48-volt hybrid system with a 13-hp integrated starter generator (ISG). This is similar to the system found in other mild hybrids such as the RAM1500 with the eTorque and is a growing subset of the Mercedes-Benz line.

B6 sees greater gains by reducing the mechanical supercharger to an electric one. Both powertrains are integrated into brake-by-wire systems to restore braking performance.

Each of the new hybrid powertrains produces slightly less power than their de-named counterparts. The 245 hp of the B5 is slightly less than the 250 hp provided by the T5, although the torque is exactly the same at 258 lb-ft. The B6 is at 295 against the 316 hp of the previous T6, but with a 15 lb-ft upgrade it gets a torque input of up to 310 lb-ft. Those figures do not include the power of the ISG, which is an additional 13-hp and 30 lp-ft.

Starting with the updated 2022 XC60 and the slightly updated 2022 V90 cross country, these new powertrains will gradually emerge across the Volvo line. I tested both vehicles around Santa Monica, California with the new B6 powertrain. This little electricity really changes things.

One of the main complaints about the T6 powertrain is its stupidity. The idea of ​​combining the supercharger and turbocharger together to minimize the initial lag when using the turbocharger at higher rpm to maintain some sort of performance was much better, but in practice it was difficult to make that change. This caused some embarrassment to the T6 Volvos, especially under hard acceleration, when changing the engine.

At B6 it was all gone. Although the ISG only produces 13 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque, it softens the butter and is no bad step between the new electric supercharger and the traditional turbocharger. Volvo claims that the XC60 T6 will cross 100 meters in four seconds, while the B6 will cross 136 meters at the same time. From behind the wheel, it feels somewhat quick, but the real benefit is the uniform power distribution of the powertrain as the engine is refreshed.

The ISG performs the stop / start function without interruption. The Volvos were on the quiet side, and there was no noise when the old powertrain restarted, but there was a slight detectable tremor. That too is now gone.

No changes in the brakes were noticeable, but it was an achievement when implementing a new system. Volvo’s older T8 powertrains had a major problem switching between regenerative and conventional braking, but that was eventually resolved on the T8s. The pedal of the B6 has a linear feel and predictable stopping power, and that’s all you need from a system like this.

Experientially, hybrid functions are invisible, which seems to be Volvo’s target. The unfortunate side effect of having a very light structure is that getting fuel economy is subtle. The 2022 XC60 B5 front-wheel drive 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, 26 mpg combined with all-wheel drive models is slightly behind at 22/24/28 mpg. This represents an improvement of 1 mpg for FWD and 1 mpg for AWD over the outgoing T5. The XC60 B6 (which is AWD only) is rated at 21/27/24 mpg, an improvement of 1 mpg over the T6.

The numbers are similarly close to the V90 cross country; The V90 CC B6 actually gets a lower highway mpg at 22/29/25 mpg, but its urban improvement improves to 1 integrated mpg against the T6.

Both vehicles come with Volvo’s new, Android-based multimedia system. As we mentioned earlier, the system is sometimes incomplete, especially for iPhone users who do not have Apple CarPlay. Volvo promises to come up with an over-the-air update, but will not accept the schedule for its arrival. As a separate Android apologist among the staff here, I was delighted as my own phone system reminded me that logging in to add my Google profile was a seamless, one-minute process. If there is a way to sync my phone (or Google profile) it can sign in to all my apps at once. As such, when you download third-party applications through the Play Store (such as Spotify), they must be logged in separately.

The best feature of the system is that it puts the entire Google Maps experience in the tool panel. Other automakers are starting to put turn-by-turn directions on the instrument panel or HUD, but this is much better and frees up the center screen to be used for other things.

The B6 is currently limited to the 2022 XC60 and V90 CC, but the Volvo model is expected to reach the S60 by the end of the year, and will increase as other vehicles in the lineup receive updates.

When Volvo pulls away from internal combustion engines, hiding its exhaust terminals and applying more power to the experience — even in small ways like this — is the right direction.
