In the first such case involving an electric car in India, a Tata Nexon EV caught fire in Mumbai and the company on Thursday said it is investigating an “isolated thermal incident”.

An incident of fire in an EV car was reported from Vasai West (near Panchavati Hotel) in Mumbai late on Wednesday night and the video of a Tata Nexon EV catching fire went viral on social media.

The company said in a statement that a detailed investigation is being conducted to ascertain the facts of the recent isolated thermal incident on social media.

It added, “We will share a detailed response after our thorough investigation. We are committed to the safety of our vehicles and their users.”

Tata Nexon EV is the best selling electric car in India and at least 2,500-3,000 cars are sold every month in the country.

The company has sold 30,000 Nexon EVs so far.

As per the video, the owner of the car charged his Nexon EV with a normal slow charger installed in his office.

After driving about 5 km towards his home, he heard some strange sounds from the car and saw flashes of warnings on the dashboard, which alerted him to stop the vehicle and get out of the car, media reports said. Is.

Later, firefighters were seen sprinkling water on a burning Nexon EV.

“This is the first event after more than 30,000 EVs across the country have covered a total distance of more than 100 million km in almost four years,” the company said.

Several electric two-wheelers have caught fire due to battery explosions in the country, prompting the government to launch a probe into incidents involving EV makers such as Ola Electric, Pure EV, Jitendra EV Tech, Ather Energy and Okinawa. — IANS
