Vietnam’s VinFast reveals EVs, plans factories in US and Germany – EV Updates 2022

Vietnamese automaker Winfast is expanding its planned EV lineup to five models and plans to open factories in the United States and Germany.

At the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week the automaker unveiled three new models. The VF5, VF6 and VF7 crossovers combine with the VF8 (formerly VF 35) and VF9 (formerly VF E36) crossovers, which debuted at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show last November.

Winfirst has begun making reservations for the VF8 and VF9, which are scheduled to reach the United States by the end of 2022. At CES, the automaker also announced a base price of $ 41,000 for the VF8 and $ 56,000 for the VF9. Those prices do not include the cost of the destination or the compulsory battery lease.

The company has not discussed specifications for the new models, but said earlier that the VF8 and VF9 will be available with 402 horsepower and a 472-pound-torque twin-motor powertrain. It cited the 300-mile limit target for VF8 and the 400-mile limit target for VF9.

Winfast announced plans for a German factory to build electric cars and buses at CES. In a statement, the company said it would work with the German Trade and Investment (GTAI) Economic Development Agency to find a location, but did not discuss a deadline to begin construction.

Winfirst said it plans to open a US factory in the second half of 2024. The new plants will join Winfast’s plant in High Phong, Vietnam, and a new battery plant being built in the country’s Hatin province.

The highly ambitious timeline for an American introduction and trace across Asia, the US and Germany reminds us of the Chinese auto launch Python, which plans to bring its first vehicle to North America, Asia and Europe very soon. That automaker almost revived with Foxconn interest last year, however, halted the accumulated credit program.

Many Chinese automakers, including the big BYD, have failed in their attempts to enter the US light vehicle market. Will Vietnam’s Winfast be any different?
